A complication of scarlet fever is glomerulonephritis. This is because:
 
  1. The high doses of penicillin used to treat the disease process are hard for the kidneys to process.
   2. The group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus can affect the kidneys if not treated.
   3. The Epstein-Barr virus can affect the kidneys if not treated.
