Rachel refuses to share a room with a heavy roommate and she voted against inviting a heavy person to join a group she belongs to. She says she would not hire an overweight person or trust one, because heavy people tend to be lazy and dishonest. Name at least two ways in which Rachel?s prejudice violates the requirements of critical thinking and explain your answers.

1. One way she violates critical thinking is that she is quick to judge someone before even getting to meet them, she has no idea who this person is and is bias towards all heavyset people, which prevents her from getting the chance to analyze the situation and use better judgment.

2. She talks about discrimination against overweight people and how socially acceptable it is to disparage someone for their weight, she says "heavy people tend to be lazy and dishonest" which could actually apply to anyone, not just because someone is heavier than another human being.

If Rachel was thinking critically would she be more open to reasons why a person may be heavy and see that they are not necesarily lazy! As it could be genetic, or the person could be on medication. Also she does not know the home environment and parenting this person had they may have resulted int their weight gain.

She is also not seeing the person as an individual and is putting her judgements on them and ultimately just grouping them as being heavy and not looking at the person.

I hope this helps xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
