Until the cord falls off, fold diapers below the level of the umbilical cord, so that when the diaper becomes wet, the cord does not become wet also. Remind the mother to continue to keep the cord dry until it falls off. The nurse should not teach the mother cover the umbilical cord with dry gauze, wash it with soap and water, or apply petroleum jelly to the site.
