An Asian male newborn is most at risk for having a cleft lip or palate. Clefts of the lip or palate occur in approximately 1 in 600 to 700 Caucasian newborns. The incidence is double that rate in Asians and half that rate in Blacks. Cleft lip occurs more often in males.
