A major cause of fetal death in mothers with type I diabetes is birth defect. From 15 percent to 45 percent of infants of mothers with type I diabetes are at increased risk of macrosomia (birth weight of 4,000 grams or higher). Extreme prematurity is a complication for infants of mothers with type I diabetes. Premature rupture of membranes is not a major complication for mothers with type I diabetes.
