The amount of time and frequency of breastfeeding is seldom the cause of nipple soreness. The woman should apply a few drops of breast milk to the nipples after feeding. Applying nipple shields when not nursing the infant will hold in moisture and worsen the nipple sorenesseven causing nipple cracks.
