Urging them to take the child to see a dentist is sound advice but doesn't suggest actions they can take now to prevent caries. Carbohydrates react with oral bacteria to cause caries, but dietary intake should not be reduced. Avoiding fluoride toothpaste may help prevent fluorosis.

Informing the family of the need for information in advance is necessary because of its personal nature.
