Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
Feed slowly, in an upright position, to prevent aspiration. Withholding feeding is neither necessary nor appropriate, as long as care is taken to prevent aspiration. The mouth should be rinsed with water after feedings. Parents should be encouraged to learn how to feed their infant.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
The infant of a woman with diabetes has an increased risk for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) because high levels of insulin appear to interfere with the production of lung surfactant. Other possible complications include polycythemia, hypoglycemia, and birth trauma (as a result of macrosomia).
