Postpartum hemorrhage can be defined as a blood loss of greater than 500 mL after a vaginal birth or greater than 1,000 mL after a cesarean birth, a decrease in hematocrit levels by 10 from prebirth to postbirth levels, and the need for transfusion.

Women who are less likely to breastfeed include those who are younger than 25 years of age, those with a lower income, primiparas, African Americans, those who participate in federal nutrition programs, those with a high school education or less, and those who are employed full time outside the home.
