During the 1930s, the number of radio stations rose from a handful to 814 by the end of the decade, and the number of radio sets in use more than quadrupled to 51 million. Radio was in its heyday as a news and entertainment medium. An important aspect of radio was its ability to create a sense of community in which

Radio's contribution to advertising history should not be underestimated, it not only ushered in the idea of broadcasting, but it also socialized consumers to depend on a connection to distant characters, programs, brands, and the idea that there were other people out there who shared this connectiona mass audience. Voices of radio friends from afar made good company particularly during hard times.
