Answer to Question 1

Networking is actively making as many people as possible aware of your job search. Everyone you knowincluding your friends, relatives, teachers, coaches, and acquaintancescan be a source of job leads and career information. The people you knowespecially someone with the right connectionscan help you get your foot in the door.

Your network is like a web that allows messages to be communicated between people. Individuals are the basis of this web, and relationships form between them. These relationships produce word-of-mouth informationinformat ion gained from conversation between the individuals in the web.

Answer to Question 2

External information is made available outside of an organization. Internal information is developed within an organization. External information includes directories, indexes, chambers of commerce resources, trade publications, and newspapers. Internal information includes annual reports, company web sites, and informational interviews.

External and internal information can be used to better understand a company's business, locations, employees, customers, and goals. Internal information can be an especially good source of topics for questions to ask potential employers. You should be knowledgeable about an organization before making contact, and internal information can help you know what you're talking about.
