Countries characterized by a similar level of economic development are more likely to be successful in establishing and maintaining regional economic integration mechanisms than countries of different levels of economic development. If member countries have different levels of economic development, it is typical that the larger more developed economies are would further their interests a the expense of countries that lag behind.
