The European Parliament is a body of members elected every five years by direct universal suffrage. Seats are allocated among member states based on their population. The Parliament debates the policies and legislation in the European Union. In the past, this has been mainly a consultative body which passed on most of the proposed legislation with a simple-majority voting. More recently, however, it has experienced extensive debate and lobbying by member countries on key international business issues.
