Answer to Question 1

In terms of underrepresentation, unless the study is shared, there can be no influence on research synthesis or guideline development. There is a term for the missing studies in an area of research called the file drawer problem. The term is dated now, but it refers to the unknown studies that were never submitted or published, left instead to the private archives and file drawers of those who did the studies. The problem of overrepresentation of positive results is likely to be an even bigger problem for two reasons: 1) As noted in our discussion of research ethics and data analysis, there is a tendency for researchers to equate a report of statistical significance with the success of their study, potentially leading to misleading reporting and 2) There is also a well-known bias toward acceptance and publication of studies that report statistically significant findings.
