The infant mortality rate is the number of deaths per thousand live births in a calendar

year. High infant mortality is related to malnutrition, as well as illness and disease. So,

high rates of infant mortality suggest low health status. High rates of infant mortality

contribute to an overall lower life expectancy within a population.
