Answer to Question 1

The norm of noninvolvement is the use of props, such as holding a newspaper in front of one's face to shield oneself from others or intently listening to a Walkman as a person enters a crowded store, to gain anonymity. The use of such devices permits someone to tune out others, enter their own private world, protect their personal space, and mask body expressions. The norm of noninvolvement can be a danger to city dwellers because it inhibits their ability to be alert to possible dangers from others, to hear instructions, or to effectively react to an emergency. On the other hand, for the reasons previously mentioned, seeking noninvolvement often outweigh the dangers.
