The three major reasons Marx identified to explain why agent provocateurs changed sides after they had infiltrated social movements are based on the social bond they developed with the members of the social movement who they were sent to spy upon. Specifically, Marx focused on these three occurrences and conditions that encouraged this bond and a change in motive by the agent provocateur:
(1 ) The agent provocateur usually shares social class, age, race or ethnicity, or religious affiliation with the group they infiltrate.
(2 ) The agent provocateur spends quality time with members of the group, develops friendships, and may engage in intimate behavior with members of the group that further develops a social bond.
(3 ) The agent provocateur is cut off from their sponsoring group which lessens the bond they have with it. This may be replaced by trust that is developed with the groups the agent is sent to infiltrate.
