Five different types of neural responses to auditory stimulation are:

 Primary-like responses: the firing patterns that most resemble VIII nerve firing
 Onset responses: initial responses to the onset of a stimulus, followed by silence
 Chopper responses: characterized by a periodic, chopped temporal pattern as long as tone is present
 Pauser responses: take longer to respond than other neurons because they have an initial on-response to strong stimuli
 Build-up responses: slow increase in firing rate through the initial stages of firing
