1. Ventilation, which involves the movement of air in the conducting respiratory passageway

2. Distribution, during which air is distributed to 300 million alveoli

3. Perfusion, which involves the movement of the oxygen-poor vascular supply to 6 billion capillaries that supply alveoli

4. Diffusion, which involves gas exchange across the alveolar-capillary membrane
