Answer to Question 1

Employees must believe that the goals are good so that they will buy in. One way to achieve this is to have employees and managers jointly set goals. The goals must also challenge people to stretch (yet still be realistic). Unattainable goals will frustrate and de-motivate people. Goals must be specific, quantified, and measurable.

Answer to Question 2

A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, a set of performance goals, and an approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. Team members interact with each other on a regular basis. A work group differs from a team. Members of a work group are held accountable for individual work, but they are not responsible for the output of the entire group. A team shares leadership roles while a group is likely to have a strong, focused leader. Group membership is more variable over time while team membership is bounded and stable over time. Teams openly discuss goals and procedures with each other until they reach a consensus.
