Answer to Question 1

According to Table 14.1, summative assessment:
a.is done to summarize how much students have learned. b. is conducted periodically.
c. focuses on the products of learning.
d. is an activity that occurs only at the end of an instructional unit. e. is teacher-directed.
f. uses assessment measures to show where a student has arrived. g. uses the scores from assessment measures to assign grades.
h. places the teacher in the role of auditor and the student in the role of the one being audited.

Answer to Question 2

The purposes of formative assessment are to monitor student progress, diagnose student strengths and weaknesses, and provide the information necessary to plan subsequent instruction.
