Positive transfer means that knowledge of one task makes learning a second task easier. Knowing one foreign language often makes learning a second less difficult.

This theory is one explanation of how transfer occurs. It suggests that ease of transfer depends on the degree of similarity between two tasks, provided that the learner recognizes the similarities.
