The consent should be voluntary, informed, and given by a competent individual. Informed consent has two purposes: to enable potential subjects to make an informed choice and to document their decision to participate. To make an informed choice, one must understand the purpose of the study, the procedures, the risks and benefits, the obligations of both themselves and the researcher. There should be no coercion of the potential subjects.
