Answer to Question 1

An interorganizational design represents a situation in which parts of different organizations come together to operate jointly by coordinating efforts on projects. This type of design has three main forms. A conglomerate is a large company that diversifies by adding an entirely unrelated businesses or product to its organizational design. The acquiring company owns the new business or product. A boundaryless organization is an organization in which chains of command are eliminated, spans of control are unlimited, and teams are empowered. Examples include modular organizations and virtual organizations. A strategic alliance occurs when two or more companies join their competitive capabilities to operate a specific business. There are three forms: value-chain partnerships, mutual service consortia, and joint ventures.

Answer to Question 2

The three key potential targets are organizational structure, technology, and people. Changing any one of these areas may affect the others.
