Answer to Question 1

There are five dimensions by which organizations may be differentiated. Hierarchy of authority is the reporting relationships within an organization. A flat organization has few layers of management; a tall organization has many layers of managers. Division of labor is the way work is assigned: the more tasks/jobs and narrow responsibilities that are in each job, the more specialization; the fewer tasks/jobs and broad responsibilities that are in each job, the more generalization. Span of control refers to how many people a manager is responsible for. An organizational chart gives an indication of span of control but is not complete. Both additional responsibilities beyond supervision and the degree of supervision required affect span of control. Line vs. staff is simply the division of jobs regarding who has decision-making authority and who advises the decision makers. Line managers are the decision makers. Staff managers are advisers to line managers. Decentralization refers to how decisions are made; by a few (centralization), or by many (decentralization). The tendency is to decentralize, but that does not work well in routine, assembly-line types of companies.
