Traditionally, much of the learning that takes place when people are taught to lead takes place in a classroom setting. The problem with this approach is that shortly after the formal training sessions are over, people revert to their old ways when they are back on the job; the result being little if any developmental progress. In contrast, action learning is a leadership development technique, which involves a continuous process of learning and reflection, which is supported by colleagues and focused on getting things done. The underlying assumption of action learning is that leaders develop most effectively when they are working on real organizational problems.
