Answer to Question 1

Gaining control over and selectively using information can involve releasing only selected information, withholding information that makes you look bad, avoiding contact with those who would ask for information, or overwhelming others with information. Cultivating a favorable impression involves dressing for success, associating with the accomplishments of others, or drawing attention to one's own successes. Building powerful coalitions means developing a base of support through activities such as lobbying for support before major decisions/meetings or conducting elevator meetings. Blaming and attacking others can be accomplished by finding a scapegoat, someone who is made to take the blame for someone else's failure or wrongdoing. Associating with powerful others involves building coalitions with or ingratiating oneself to powerful people. Creating obligations and using reciprocity can involve doing favors for others in the organization, favors that cost them relatively little. Later, they try to maximize their returns on those favors.
