Stress causes a variety of health problems. Medical consequences include heart disease and strokes, ulcers, physical problems, diabetes, and lung disease. Behavioral consequences include smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, accident proneness, violence, and appetite disorders. Family conflicts, sleep disorders, sexual dysfunction, and depression are some psychological consequences of stress. On the positive side, sometimes stress leads to improved performance as individuals respond with exceptional performance at times of potentially high stress.
