Answer to Question 1

Personal escalation dilemmas (such as continuing to gamble after losing money, pouring resources into a car or
house that continues to deteriorate, and waiting in long lines) relate to whether to continue with a losing course of
action or to cut one's losses. Interpersonal escalation dilemmas (such as union strikes or wars) involve two or more
people, often in a competitive relationship. In most cases, people fall into these traps because the initial situation
does not appear to be a losing enterprise. The bigger the investment and the more severe the possible loss, the more
people are prone to stay in the situation.
