Answer to Question 1

Locus of control is the extent to which people believe that their behavior has a real effect on what happens to them. People who maintain that individuals are in control of their lives are said to have an internal locus of control, so these types of employees may work hard to succeed at a firm. People who think that forces beyond their control dictate what happens to them are said to have an external locus of control. An employee who fails to get a promotion may attribute that failure to a politically motivated boss or just bad luck, rather than to his own lack of skills or poor performance record.

Answer to Question 2

Contract manufacturing is used by firms, both large and small, that outsource most or all of their manufacturing needs to other companies. Its advantages are low financial risk, minimal required resources devoted to manufacturing, and the ability to focus firm's resources on other areas of the value chain. Its disadvantages are reduced control, reduced learning potential, and potential public relations problems.
