Answer to Question 1

ANS:
Random selection refers to the process of selecting a sample from a population by chance means so that every member of the population has an equal probability of being chosen. Random assignment is the assignment of subjects to groups in such a way that, for any given placement, every member of the population has an equal probability of being assigned to any of the groups.

Answer to Question 2

ANS:
Both are subject effects that threaten internal validity. The Hawthorne effect refers to the tendency for subjects in the experimental group to change their behavior because of the attention gained from participating in an experiment. The John Henry effect refers to the tendency of control group subjects who know they are in an experiment to exert extra effort and perform above their typical average.
