Data from numerous studies demonstrate that, in many situations, any behaviors a leader exhibits are irrelevant. Certain individual, job, and organizational variables can act as substitutes for leadership or neutralize the leader's ability to influence followers. These things make it impossible for leader behavior to make any difference in follower outcomes. They negate the leader's influence.
