The address verification system detects fraud by comparing the address entered on a Web page with the address information on file with the cardholder's issuing bank. This method results in a number of false positives, meaning that the merchant may reject a valid order. Also, cardholders often have new addresses or simply make mistakes in inputting numeric street addresses or zip codes.
