The gathering of over 1500 individuals, health professionals, and organizations in Washington, D.C., in January of 2000 undertook the task of outlining specific goals that would assist the U.S. population to avoid disease and maintain their health (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2001). The result of this initiative was called Healthy People 2010 . For the next decade Healthy People has taken the 10 leading indicators to a renewed focus of identifying, measuring, tracking, and reducing health disparities through determinants of health approach.
