One advantage of both the total patient care and case method of patient care is the consistency of one individual who cares for patients during an entire shift. This enables the development of a relationship based on trust. Some disadvantages of these models include: the nurse may not have the same patients from day to day and is, therefore, not providing an ongoing continuum of care; these models require a high level of RN nursing hours to deliver care; and these models tend to be costly.
