Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
The policy of the Public Health Service has promoted the humane care and treatment of animals in research.
An increasing number of nurses are involved with animal research and need to be aware of these issues.
Although opinions are strong on this issue, it is not really a researchable one.
Institutional Review Boards are designed to protect human subjects in research.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
A pilot study is not required for research solely on the basis that children are the subjects. The necessity of conducting a pilot study is based on whether or not the tools used have established reliability and validity or if there are questions regarding the methods used to guide the study.
Assent is the child's agreement to participate in the study and is needed.
Informed consent is required for all research with human subjects regardless of the subjects' age.
Permission is needed from the parents, as well as any agency involved, such as a school, if the child will be allowed to participate.
