1, Discuss splinter parties, or offshoots of a major party (e.g., Teddy Roosevelt's Progressives in 1912, Strom Thurmond's States' Righters in 1948, and George Wallace's American Independents in 1968), which claim that they did not get fair hearings from Republicans or Democrats.
2, Discuss third parties that are built around a specific cause.
3, Describe third parties that have formed around popular individuals with presidential aspirations (e.g., John Anderson in 1980 and Ross Perot in 1992 and 1996).
4, Assess whether third parties should play a larger role in electoral politics in the United States.
