1. Shan tattooing includes elements of local spiritual beliefs of highland peoples in Southeast Asia, combined with features of Hinduism and Buddhism.
2. The local belief in the power of tattoos understands them to be able to have an effect on other people, increase the bearer's skill, and provide physical protection.
3. An example from Buddhism is the Five Buddha tattoo, which women are not allowed to bear.
4. An example from Hinduism is the depiction of the goddess Saraswati on the right shoulder.
