Answer to Question 1

Describe one type of supportive learning environment in the classroom for oral language comprehension.
(Responses may include small group talk, role play, dialogic reading, socio-dramatic play or word play. A sample response is provided below. All responses should describe a few features of a supportive learning environment.)
Socio-dramatic play is a supportive learning environment for oral language comprehension. It promotes collaboration and cooperation, as well as imaginative uses of language and role-play. Children need to use both meta-language and pretend talk to manage and act out their play. Sufficient time needs to be provided for socio-dramatic play (at least 30 minutes). Themed play areas support socio-dramatic play. Teachers should provide support for non-players to help them join the play.

Answer to Question 2

Explain why listening comprehension is critical for early literacy and learning to read.
Listening comprehension is critical because it lays the foundations for reading comprehension. It predicts future reading achievement. Children need lots of opportunities to use listening as a tool for comprehension so that they build up vocabulary, language conventions and academic language. Activities such as recounting events, storytelling, retellings and substantive conversations help children develop listening comprehension skills.
