To prevent the lung from collapsing, a closed drainage system is used, which maintains the lung cavity's normal negative pressure. The chest tubes are connected to a pleural drainage system with collection, water-seal, and suction control chambers to drain secretions and reestablish negative pressure in the pleural space.
