The following factors are necessary for adequate dye concentration: ingestion of the correct number of dye tablets, adequate absorption of the dye, abstinence from food the morning of the exam, uptake for the portal system and excretion of the dye by the liver, patency of the cystic duct, and concentration of the dye within the gallbladder.
