You notice that your 75-year-old Jewish patient, Mrs. Stern, is sending her meal tray back with much food uneaten. What would be an appropriate response?
 
  a. Tell her she must eat the food she is given to aid healing and recuperation
  b. Remark that you notice she is not eating much and ask her if she follows a kosher diet
  c. Tell the dietitian to send Mrs. Stern a kosher diet without saying anything to her first
  d. Ask her family if she is a fussy eater

You should tell her that you noticed she is not eating enough and ask about her dietary preferences. Inform her that if she wants a kosher menu, it can be provided. Response A is inappropriate and insensitive. She can be provided the necessary nutrients with a different diet. Response C is also inappropriate because it does not respect the patient and her wishes. Finally, response D is inappropriate and belittling to the patient.

Answer to Question 2

D
Dryness of the eyes can lead to irritation and eye infections. Eye dryness is usually not severe enough to cause corneal abrasions (response B). Glaucoma and the development of cataracts are not related to eye dryness (responses A and C).
