Answer to Question 1

Ans: B
Diminished positioning sensations in the lower extremities increase risk for falls. With older adults: bones increase resorption due to increased parathyroid hormone, there is degeneration of collagen and elastin cells, and the number of skeletal muscle fibers decreases.

Answer to Question 2

Ans: D
The TUG test is a reliable measure of gait speed, as well as an indicator of fall risk and ability to safely perform ADLs. Higher scores (i.e., longer time to complete the tasks) are associated with increased risk for falls. Cutoff scores between 12 and 14 seconds are discussed in the literature, but a score of 12.47 seconds is recommended in a review of studies.
