If cataract surgery was performed without a lens implant, the patient will wear glasses or contact lenses but will have a decrease in depth perception. The patient should not drive and should use extra caution negotiating stairs. The other instructions are appropriate for any patient having cat-aract surgery.

Risk factors for osteoporosis include thin body frame, white race, advancing age, alcoholism, and smoking, among others. The 84-year-old who smokes is at highest risk despite being Asian.
