Sexually transmitted infection.
Caused by bacterium Treponema pallidum.
In the U.S., 36,000 new cases reported each year.
Four stages:
- Primary stage: presence of painless chancre.
- Secondary stage: painless skin rash that bursts and oozes, painful swelling of joints, headaches, and fever.
- Latent stage: may be dormant for 1 to 40 years.
- Tertiary stage: large ulcers all over the body; affects numerous organs, destroying them; damage to brain (neurosyphilis), leading to paralysis and death.

Answer to Question 2

Sexually transmitted infection.
Caused by bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Prime age is 20 to 24.
In men, symptoms often emerge two to five days after exposure.
Penile discharge, inflamed urethra, and burning sensation while urinating.
