1) Individuals who are exposed to stress are more likely to abuse drugs or to relapse.
2) High stress was found to predict continued drug use, even after long periods of abstinence.
3) In animals not previously exposed to drug use, stressors increased vulnerability for self-administration of drugs.
4) Among drug-free cocaine users in treatment, exposure to stress was related to significant increases in cravings for cocaine.
5) There is a strong relationship between stress coping resources and the ability to maintain abstinence.
