Answer to Question 1

Roseto is a close-knit community in Pennsylvania that consists of religious immigrants from southern Italy. Residents of Roseto have average incidences of exercise, cigarette smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and stress. Their diets are also higher than the average American diet in fat and cholesterol, and yet the men only have 1/6 the incidence of heart disease and death from heart disease when compared to the general American population. Researchers concluded that the sense of community and strong social ties between residents acted as a buffer against heart disease. This phenomenon is known as the Roseto Effect.

Answer to Question 2
