As many as 80 percent of those under age 18 and 40 percent of adults over age 65 report being lonely at least some of the time. In the ACHA national survey, 59.2 percent of undergraduates reported feeling very lonely at some time in the past 12 months. Loneliness, defined as feelings of distress and dysphoria resulting from a discrepancy between a person's desired and achieved social relations, stems from perceived, rather than actual, isolation. People may live relatively solitary lives and not feel lonely or, conversely, surround themselves with people yet feel lonely nonetheless.

Attentive, authentic listening is more than hearing words being spoken. It is hearing what's being said nonverbally as well as verbally, processing the information, being able to reflect back the content, and utilizing appropriate verbal and non-verbal responses. This is called active or reflective listening. It expresses real interest and makes another person feel that he or she is being understood. It also communicates to others that you want to know and understand how they feel and think.
