Answer to Question 1

Alzheimer's disease is a chronic degenerative illness in which changes in nerve cell communication in the brain result in mental deterioration. It progresses in stages, each of which is marked by increasingly impaired memory and judgment. In later stages of the disease these symptoms can be accompanied by agitation and restlessness (especially at night), loss of sensory perceptions, muscle twitching, and repetitive actions. Many patients become depressed, combative, and aggressive. In the final stage, disorientation is often complete. The person becomes dependent on others for eating, dressing, and other activities. Identity loss and speech problems are common. Eventually, control of bodily functions may be lost.
