1. Primary syphilis: characterized by the appearance of a chancre at the infection site.
2. Secondary syphilis: characterized by a rash or white patches on skin or mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, or genitals
3. Latent syphilis: characterized by lesions called gummas.
4. Tertiary/late syphilis: indications include heart and CNS damage, blindness, deafness, paralysis, premature senility, and ultimately dementia.
